On October 7, 2023, a major conflict erupted in the Gaza Strip when Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups launched a large-scale attack on southern Israel, resulting in over 1,200 deaths and the abduction of over 200 hostages.
This incident triggered Israeli retaliatory attacks on Gaza and an ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, leading to significant suffering for people on both sides. According to United Nations data from July 6, the number of displaced people in Gaza had reached 1.9 million, accounting for 90% of the population. The conflict has severely damaged hospitals, schools, homes, and utilities, leading to extreme shortages of food, water, medical care, and basic necessities. A few months ago, a famine arose in the north due to blockades, causing the price of a 25kg bag of flour to skyrocket from US$10 to US$270. Although there has been some improvement, the population remains in deep distress.
Currently, refugees in Gaza urgently need the following assistance:
• Food and drinking water • Medical aid • Shelter • Trauma counseling
Crossroads Publications is aiming to raise US$100,000 to provide relief through Gaza's only evangelical church, Gaza Baptist Church. Our contact is Pastor Hanna Massad. In October 2007, one of Gaza Baptist Church's leaders, Rami Ayyad, was kidnapped and killed by unidentified militants. Following Ayyad's murder, church leaders, including Pastor Massad, left Gaza on government advice. Pastor Massad's family moved to Jordan, while five others relocated to the West Bank near Bethlehem.
Pastor Massad currently resides in the United States, where he conducts worship and pastoral care via Zoom. He and his team visit the church in Gaza and have established the Christian Mission to Gaza, which helps refugees in Gaza as well as Syrian and Iraqi refugees stranded in Jordan
